I really admired the brand when I was a student years ago in Brighton. I was doing a Fashion/Textile Design degree and obviously the brand was very relevant for me. As a Print Designer CK is pretty much a ‘perfect fit’ due to the sheer amount of drawing and designing that we get to do. Also Cath herself was very involved with the brand when I started. Working with her was a truly inspiring process and I feel very privileged to have had that experience. She taught me a lot about what it means to be a good designer.
It depends on at which point we are during the season hence this changes quite a bit. We start a collection by creating mood boards, researching and collating new ideas for an upcoming season. Afterwards we will start drawing and designing the prints. I manage a team of six designers across the home and kids departments so a lot of my time is spent helping them develop their ideas into prints as well as working on my own.
The people. We have a fantastic team here at CK. Everybody is passionate about the brand and our ethos. We work hard and strive for the best yet the environment is also incredibly friendly.
Every time I see a person on the street wearing something from CK I feel immensely proud. I was on the bus as few weeks ago and spotted a little girl wearing one of our dresses (a print which I designed) and it put a big smile on my face. Nothing beats seeing your designs being worn and enjoyed by customers.
The company really values its employees and this is reflected in everyone’s positivity, which is infectious.
Go into one of our stores and really study our products. Some people still think that we are a ‘flowery and vintage’ brand. In actual fact novelty prints are key at CK and have proved to be very successful for us, in some cases, more than our florals. Also our products are very modern and usable. We pride ourselves on designing items which are suited to today’s consumer’s lifestyle.
From the ones which I did it would have to be the Robots. I love the variety of Robots we have in the print as each one seems to have their own personality. It was really fun to research and then draw. Portobello is another favourite print of mine. It’s a beautifully drawn floral with a lot of attention to detail.
The Stanley Mugs. We have a huge array of prints on them, which means that there is something for everyone. I use them everyday both at home and work.
