I was a university and wanted to work in an environment that was fun and flexible and would help me develop my skill set beyond academia.
I am usually found chatting with long time Cath fans about the latest products, or introducing tourists visiting the famous Portobello Market to our great British brand. Alongside that I’ll be helping to ensure that the store looks its best, that behind the scenes all is running smoothly and that my colleagues have all they need to do their jobs and enjoy themselves!
The amount that I have learnt is staggering! I’ve always been encouraged to ask questions and develop myself which is a wonderful environment to work in. But mainly I love working with the great team we have at Porto. We all get on really well and help each get through those manic Saturdays!
There isn’t one single moment that stands out. For me the best moments have been when we’ve pulled together as a team to ensure a big project is completed on time, or helped a customer get that particular item that they’ve fallen in love with, even if it means literally scouring the country. Although the time my manager and I were bought Hummingbird cupcakes by some customers will always be a favourite!
It’s a relaxed and fun place to work. Lots of customers have been shopping at Cath since the first store opened over 20 years ago, so we really get to build relationships with them and have a good chat! As with any job it has its stressful moments and you will be pushed to go the extra mile, but we all strive to help each other and embrace the odd bit of chaos! It’s an ever growing company, so it’s an exciting time to be here.
Cath likes to help develop their employees, investing in time and opportunities to grow outside of your existing role, which means that many people work here for a long time. Perhaps the most unique aspect though is the customer loyalty. We see customers still using bags they bought years ago and coming back to buy items for their children or grandchildren. You don’t see that with most brands!
Be prepared to have fun but also to work hard. Retail is fast paced and you have to be cool, calm and collected at all times, even when your feet hurt and your customer is unhappy. It’s not as easy as people think, but the skills you learn and friends you make are invaluable, whether this a job to get you through uni or the beginning of your career.
It’s a tie between Cowboy and Little Boats.
My Little Boats Espadrilles. I may have to purchase a second pair as I’m currently live in mine! They are so versatile and comfy!
