When I started working for Cath Kidston I was completing my second masters degree in Drama in Kent. I guess what I was looking for career-wise was to be involved in an environment that could reflect my creativity, originality and uniqueness and that would constantly stimulate my thoughts and mind. I find Cath Kidston’s patterns and colours do so and therefore, also, there can never be a blue day.
Everyday is an adventure and you never know who and what kind of customers you will come across; this is the reason why we must always be prompt and very versatile when it comes to customer service. I notice massive differences just by thinking of the customers in the Canterbury store (where I initially started my career at Cath Kidston) from the customers in Harrods; they are all lovely customers, believe me, but they are very different and one must find the appropriate way of approaching and serving a customer on a daily basis; it is a challenge but it is also very fun. Moreover, I love improvising and coming up with alternatives if the customers cannot find precisely what they are looking for (if the product is discontinued or part of a previous collection). To sum it up my typical day at Cath Kidston involves a bit of improv, communication translated into customer service, closing the sales (and some very juicy ones too from time to time!), a bit of tidying (which always comes in handy) and taking new initiatives to improve customer service and generally, also the shop floor.
I love the fact that you can really find a family within Cath Kidston. It is a company where, if you wish, you can really progress within the retail industry. It gives you a chance to be creative, put your skills into test and really challenges you to improve and entices you to come up with new ideas and techniques.
I have had a variety of really proud moments and that is primarily due to the fact I love going the extra mile when it comes to providing exceptional customer service. Just by seeing the customer extremely satisfied by the customer service I have provided makes me really happy and proud to be part of the CK Team. A proud moment is definitely when the customer comes back into the store and addresses you by your first name with a smile; you know at that point you have provided the best customer service they could wish for and any item they would buy in the future from Cath Kidston, rest assured, they will buy from you. Nevertheless, if I were to materialise particular achievements and moments so far, I would mention being awarded Best Seller of the Year 2015 (as I have always hit my daily/weekly targets and more…just a couple of sofas really!) and also, being one of the winners of CK’s Best In Show competition (where I state my skills and techniques within the workplace with a pinch of my bubbly personality) would definitely represent another proud moment and achievement as I have been able to integrate my academic training skills into the workplace.
As I have previously mentioned it is an adventure. A good and colourful adventure in an environment where there is always something to do and where you can never get bored. Every single pattern just immerses you and stimulates your imagination. Coming to work has definitely become my cure to a bad day!
Do not be threatened by all the prints and never think of not applying because it all seems too much information to remember! Believe me, it is really not! It is a really fun environment and if you are looking for a great career in retail, whether part-time or full-time, Cath Kidston is definitely a great way to go. Not only you will be working for a luxurious brand, but you will also be surrounded by a team of great people, a very stimulating and colourful environment where learning and improvement is part of the daily routine as well as creativity, imagination and the will to go the extra mile and improvise (within reason of course!)
A little bit more about you
I do not have a favourite Cath Kidston print. I have several depending on the mood I am in and style I want to wear. I am a particularly big fan of Billie Goes To Town to the point I have the overnight bag, the dress and have also bought some fabric and made a lampshade out of it. On other days, I fancy colourful and flowery patterns. My favourite vintage flower pattern would be the Portobello Rose where the British rose meets the exotic colours. In addition, I am also a great fan of the fun/unique prints such as the Townhouses and the cute Penguins, not to mention the pattern that will never go out of style: Cowboys!
My all-time favourite product is actually my first ever purchase I have made from Cath Kidston: the large Townhouses Tote Bag. Although it does not have an outer zip, the bag has accompanied me throughout my last year at University, not to mention a variety of daily trips back and forth Canterbury/London with my laptop and personal belongings. The lack of an outer zip is no threat at all as the bag possesses really great zipped pockets for secure storage of smaller belongings inside whilst you can use the rest of the bag to carry bigger belongings such as laptop, chargers, diary and make up bags. The bag has also aged really well and is very strong (you can never go wrong with leather) and really transpires a unique vintage feeling. An all-time favourite and must have!
